Countries and capital cities

We have started incorporating some general knowledge games into our lessons. Here is the first one!

A selection of country outlines (here you can find a collage of some of the countries my students come from or can relate to but of course you could make your own collage) on an A3 size printable.

In a different printable you can find their capital cities.

You could laminate the two printables, cut out the capital cities, stick some blue-tac and get your children to pin them on the right country outline.

We have also printed out famous landmarks from each city to add to the learning experience. However, you could use flags, photographs of loved ones who live in these cities or even foods or really anything that you may want your children to relate to.

You could colour the country and the capital city the same colour to help your children learn them.

Which country would you like us to add?

Awards and certificates

My students love their awards as much as they love the contents of our prize box! I am looking forward to the look on their faces when they see all their hard work being rewarded!

This year I have made awards for all the different achievements my students can reach and it has worked wonders with the individual areas I want them to improve. The awards look amazing and the children feel very proud holding them!

You can purchase the set of 8 awards here

Our reading corner

I always try to find new ways to encourage my students to read books. Reading books develops vocabulary and spelling skills, improves expression, unlocks new experiences and senses for children and enhances their imagination. A book is truly a child's best friend!

I have set up a book club at school for my students. We get together, read a story and then complete a handout with fun and engaging activities.

This new feature is now available on the Greek4Kids blog. The book we are exploring this week is Όταν η πασχαλίτσα συνάντησε ελέφαντα.

Print out the activities' handout and enjoy this book with your children!

The board resembles a school blackboard

while the days are a different colour each to help your child with the early letter recognition

Classroom Decoration: School Year Planner

Our classroom is on holiday but there is a lot to be done in preparation for the new school year. Teachers' work doesn't finish at the end of the school year. Teaching planning, new educational material, classroom decoration, resources organisation and much more take place during the summer months.

Since planning is a teacher's best friend, we always enjoy making planners, schedule sheets, lesson plans,  homework and classwork notebooks, the list goes on. Here is a planner you can use for your classroom but also for your childrens' homework space at home. We are going for a red, white and black theme in our classroom this year hence the colour coordination. More themes will soon be available.

Stay tuned for the whole 2013-2014 School Year starter kit.

Classroom Decoration: Classwork reward chart

My students love reward schemes! They excitedly wait for the next star/sticker/certificate!

Here is the reward chart we use for the overall classwork/homework achievements. In the first column I have put the name of each student. You can laminate the chart and write their names with whiteboard marker or even print their names and use blue-tac to stick them on each box.

Five stars grant the student one sticker and five stickers grant them a prize! Our reward box (κουτί επιβράβευσης) includes pencils, stickers, rubbers, highlighters, coloured sticky-tape, glow-in-the-dark stars and other shapes, the children love them!

Colour of the week: Yellow

An old favourite feature is back! The Colour of the Week is yellow!

A great opportunity for you and your little one to go around the neighbourhood for a stroll or even look around your home for yellow objects! Collect as many as you can, put them in a box and talk about them. You can ask your little one to categorize them according to type, the letter they begin with or even their shade of yellow!

Here is a colouring page of the sun to accompany the theme! Your little one could colour it, make a collage using different materials of yellow colour, finger or sponge paint it!
